Life consists of moments big and small. As the moments go by, are you doing things that fulfill you and make your heart swell? We should ask ourselves “Am I living my dream life?”. Too often we stay in survival mode just handling the day-to-day tasks.

However big or small your dreams may be, you have every right to chase after them. If you find yourself living a life that is perhaps better than surviving but less than thriving, ask yourself, “What is my dream life?” and “How can I make it a reality?”.

Here are some steps to designing the life of your dreams:

Step 1: Take Stock

Creating your dream life starts with taking stock of where you are at. After that, you can identify what changes you would like to make.

First, what is working in your life, and what is not?

Make a list of everything in your life you are grateful for and list your priorities. For example, you have a loving family and are grateful for healthy, happy children. Then, list what needs to go, for instance, maybe those 10-20 pounds you’ve packed on since the children have arrived.

Title your lists

Title your lists “stay” and “go” or “Yay” and “Nay”. Name them whatever you want but, have fun with it. Next, it’s time to address the “needs to go” column.

What are these unfulfilling items on your “to-go” list?

Is it a draining relationship? A job that’s too stressful or at a dead end? This may be the most difficult part of your life to change. Try to identify what is keeping you stuck with this less-than-desirable condition in your life. Then, make a plan to get some help removing this from your life or improving the situation. Call in a favor from a friend to hand your resume over to her boss or hire a life coach or therapist to support you.

Also, consider adding a third column of what you hope to gain. What goal or achievement are you looking to add to your life?

Step 2: Identify Your Desires

Ever heard of someone doing something amazing and you stop in your tracks and imagine what it would be like to do that same thing? That’s a sign you should pay attention to.  Whether you have a clear or fuzzy picture of what your dream life would be, spend some time visualizing the final product. Be as specific as you can. What does your future ideal partner look like? How does spending time with this person make you feel? What is your dream car? What’s the aesthetic of your dream home?

Create a vision board full of pics that represent your dreams or journal about how your daily dream life feels. These tools of manifestation not only help you call in your dreams but they will assist you in identifying how to make them a reality.

Step 3: Make Realistic Plans

Plans will turn your dreams into actionable steps. The best and most achievable goals fit the acronym SMART for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Make sure each goal you set meets these criteria.

Lastly, as you chase down your dream life remember that flexibility is key. Life happens and you are certain to run into obstacles along your path. The only time we truly fail is when we give up. The continued pursuit of your dreams is what makes the human experience worth living.
