If you’ve ever heard the advice, “Don’t grow up, it’s a trap”, you might have wondered what it meant. Basically adulthood is an implied destination that is associated with responsibility.

Young people may feel that adults have more freedom. However, the grass is not always greener on the adult side of the fence.

After all when you’re young, you can sometimes focus on what you are not old enough to do. You can’t wait to be the legal age to drive a car, or have your own place and make decisions about your life.

Growing up is a trap because although it sounds magical to make decisions for yourself and have the ability to do whatever you want (i.e. parents no longer telling you what to do), that responsibility can be stressful.

As a result Adults have to pay bills and work to afford their lifestyle in addition to potentially providing for and taking care of children.

Adult decisions and responsibilities require maturity and problem-solving. But, it doesn’t all have to be doom and gloom. There are plenty of ways to keep youthful fun in your life despite your advancing age.

Here are some ways to stay forever young while still being an adult:

  • However stay involved in hobbies or sports that you loved as a child: If you were a competitive athlete in your youth, find adult sports like running road races or playing tennis or golf. There are several competitive sports you can play long into your elderly years.
  • Especially make time for friends: Just because you are an adult and maybe your social calendar is dictated by your children’s activities, you can still make time for your friends too. Adult-only socialization is necessary for a balanced life.
  • Generally keep dreaming: Even if you have achieved what you feel is the pinnacle of your career, or are retired, there are dreams you can still pursue. Did you always want to own a motorcycle or learn to bake? Working toward a goal or dream will keep you young.
  • Likewise Keep learning: Old dogs actually CAN learn new tricks. Learning a new skill or a new language will not only keep your brain young and healthy, but it will add to your happiness too.

Meanwhile in today’s world, people have become more fluid i.e free to be whatever they want to be. Similarly we must now pause before identifying someone by gender, race, or occupation. We should stop asking children what they want to be when they grow up.

This question implies that they must make this one decision and stick with it forever when, in reality, they have more freedom than ever to be whoever they want to be.

People say “don’t grow up” because it implies that you would have reached an irreversible destination. However, if we look at getting older as a process and not a location. Perhaps we can identify ways to keep some youthful experiences in our lives. Still be bogged down by the draining responsibilities of adulthood.
