The thought of a yearly review can sometimes feel more like a doctor’s visit than an annual retreat. After all who wants to put a microscope on the past … especially during the holiday season?!

Well … me, me … I do Let me tell you why.

I have been doing an annual review consistently for 5 years now. Looking back at my one-word themes for the last 5 years, it is incredible how they set the tone for the 12 months that follow. It only takes a couple of days … or a couple of hours if you want, to set a theme for the entire year.

Each year my life seems to take a noticeable turn towards the life I truly want and looking back, it’s the intention I set at the beginning of the year that seems to be the pivot point. Even if that theme was to have no plans and no direction, but rather to explore and enjoy, it happened.

So why not take the time to figure out what you want most, then set it and forget it?

How Do the Yearly Review?

If taking the time out for self-reflection feels like a dentist is about to poke at your sensitive teeth, remember that doing a yearly review is really about taking time out for yourself, and taking care of yourself. It is only as reflective, as goal-changing, and as intense, as you need or want it to be.

So before you start your 2023, plan a few hours to reflect on your 2022 and what you’d like to see for 2023.

Here’s the Reflective Review, that I use during my yearly review to get me thinking. This format was inspired by a GTD® Connect Webinar on the Annual Review

Look back

  • What are your wins for the year
  • What are you most happy about completing?
  • What is your unfinished business from 2022?
  • What are your lessons learned from 2022?
  • What compliment would you like to have received? given?
  • What one word or phrase best sums up and describes your 2022 experience?

Look forward

  • What would you like to be your biggest win in 2023?
  • What do you think your biggest risk will be?
  • What compliment would you most like to receive? give?
  • What brings you the most delight and how will you do or have more of that in 2023?
  • What one word or phrase would you like to have as your theme in 2023? (Write it out and put it on your desk)
