Sporting Unity – Overcoming Colonial Legacies through Olympic Education

2025/ Ongoing

Context:

Sporting Unity is an Erasmus+–funded initiative designed to foster cross-cultural understanding and critical thinking by exploring the historical and contemporary links between Olympic education and colonialism. The project leverages the universal values of the Olympic Games respect, fairness, and inclusion to empower youth and address issues of social justice and inclusion across Europe and Africa.

Challenge

Despite the Olympic Games’ global reputation for unity, their historical connections to colonial legacies are often overlooked. Young people lack accessible tools and spaces to critically examine these narratives while engaging in intercultural dialogue on fairness and inclusion.

Approach

As Project Manager for Champions Factory Africa, I oversaw research, digital tool development, and the coordination of facilitator-led workshops and virtual exchange activities. The consortium of seven partners collaboratively designed e-learning materials, educational plans, and training modules. A dedicated dissemination strategy, branding package, and social media campaigns were also launched to expand impact and sustainability.

Outcome (Ongoing/Expected)

Sporting Unity will deliver digital learning resources, host virtual exchanges, and produce research reports that deepen understanding of Olympic history and colonialism. The project is expected to enhance intercultural competence, promote critical thinking, and empower youth across Europe and Africa.

My Role

I serve as the Project Manager for Champions Factory Africa, responsible for coordinating work packages, managing timelines, facilitating collaboration with African partners, and contributing to research and educational tool development.
