What will the Next African Unicorns be?

Given that Africa’s economy is the one that is expanding at the quickest rate in the globe, the continent offers the ideal environment for business owners and investors alike. There are already a few unicorns on the African continent, and investment money continues to pour in.

Great prospects to establish huge, successful enterprises may be found in Africa, making it an attractive location for multinational as well as African-based organizations who are searching for new growth markets.

It has a youthful population that is rapidly expanding and is becoming more urbanized. Additionally, it has a quick adoption rate of new technology, which makes it a fruitful arena for innovation.

However, Africa’s business climate is still little understood, and its reputation for being complicated, conflicted, and corrupt is the only thing that many executives in Western countries know about it.

How Africa's "Big Four " took the Lead

According to the African Development Bank (AfDB), the “big four” countries make more strides than other African nations when it comes to start-up investment and finance. This is due, in large part, to the fact that these countries have sizable populations and significant economies.

For instance, Nigeria, which now has a population of 206 million people and a GDP of around 440 billion dollars, is expected to become the third most populous nation in the world by the year 2050.

Because of this, Nigeria is a desirable destination for first capital investment in new businesses. In a similar vein, Egypt, Kenya, and South Africa each have one of the biggest economies in Africa, with respective GDPs of $404 billion, $110 billion, and $420 billion.

The vast populations of the main four nations, the most populous of which is Egypt with 102 million people, followed by South Africa with 59 million and Kenya with 53 million, provide robust platforms for returns on venture capital investment.

Nevertheless, population and GDP are not the only factors to consider. Several other, more nuanced elements are necessary to propel investment into start-ups.

However, despite having populations of 59 and 115 million, respectively, countries like Tanzania and Ethiopia have not yet secured anything like the enormous venture capital the big four usually draw in.

Even though they have high levels of wealth and a hospitable regulatory framework for start-ups, island republics like Mauritius as well as Seychelles have not yet increased their venture investments.

According to research conducted, one of the factors that lead to the low levels of start-up financing in various African nations is the absence of fintech innovation.

The four largest tech centers in Africa are also the ones that draw the most fintech capital throughout the continent. There is no question that nations in Africa that are lacking in fintech solutions have a lower probability of securing significant start-up financing and investments.

Several other issues, including the accessibility of economic resources, the existence of restraints on a political and socio-economic level, and the existence of inadequate financial institutions, all work to diminish the appeal of investing in many African nations.

How the Rest Can Catch Up?

African nations must begin offering financial and technological venture capitalists fiscal and non-financial incentives to invest in the continent. The governments of African nations that are not part of the “big four” should also work to strengthen their legal and institutional systems to develop an investment ecosystem that is welcoming to investors and new businesses.

As a result, non-big-four nations in Africa would become more desirable locations for new business venture capital.

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) may be a useful instrument for countries that are trying to attract investors.

By lowering investment obstacles and enhancing investment governance inside their nations, African governments in countries that are not part of the “big four” may benefit from the AfCFTA and boost the amount of start-up capital they get.

The achievements of Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya, as well as South Africa, are not only a reason for each nation and its people to feel a sense of pride in their accomplishments, but they also provide proof that innovation can thrive in any location if the appropriate circumstances are fulfilled.

Young, intelligent, and driven to succeed are the defining characteristics of the people living in Africa. The budding tech sector on the continent will develop if it is provided with the appropriate resources to enter the tech industry and if the appropriate rules are enacted.

Local Funders Swoop in

One further development that industry experts anticipate will continue to gain momentum in the year 2022 is an expansion in the variety of financial resources that are accessible to African startup companies.

It has been shown that the majority of growth money in Africa originates either from the United States or Europe (including the UK). Nevertheless, there are indications that things are beginning to shift in a positive direction.

The number of local funds that have come in to cover financial shortfalls, most often for early-stage enterprises, witnessed an increase over the previous year.

Across the continent, hundreds of local angel investor organizations have emerged, and there has been a steady growth in the number of incubation centers and accelerator laboratories.

Former company entrepreneurs who want to reinvest in the community often create such organizations. The amount of money available in Nigeria has expanded to the point where a new organization known as the Lagos Angel Network has been established.

The mission of this organization is to bring together the most important part-time financiers working in the startup ecosystem.

However, Nigeria is not in any way an exception to this rule. Since the beginning, Egypt has been home to a sizable number of business incubators, accelerators, and angel investors.

Angel investor groups include organizations such as HIMangel and CairoAngel, to name only two examples. It is possible to say the same thing about Kenya and South Africa, both of which have successful entrepreneurs who are investing money back into the ecosystem.

As a direct consequence of this, an increasing amount of local money may be utilized to support local startup businesses.
